Bowen Lookout Trail is a short hike on Cypress Mountain that is great for snowshoeing come winter. It’s a free trail perfect for any beginners or experienced snowshoers who want a quick adventure. We did Bowen Lookout in the beginning of December just as the local ski hills opened, guaranteeing enough snow. The trailhead is past the Cypress Creek Lodge in the downhill ski area of Cypress Mountain. Make sure to grab your free Backcountry Access Corridor (BAC) pass at the Black Mountain Lodge in the parking low first!
The Bowen Lookout trail was probably doable with only micro-spikes (we saw some people slipping and sliding down only wearing runners), but we always like to venture onto the snowbanks beside the main trail. It’s always more fun that way, especially for Rey! The trail started in the forest before reaching a meadow-like opening. Then it was onto switchbacks until we got to the lookout, and those Howe Sound views never get old. When we arrived there was only one other group at the lookout. We quickly took our Christmas card photo and one of Rey by the iconic naked trees before the crowds arrived. Then we sat back and ate snacks while enjoying the view before heading back down.
One thing to note, the summer trail to Bowen Lookout cuts through the Yew Lake Interpretive Trail, which does not allow dogs. However, from my research the Bowen Lookout winter trail is dog-friendly.
Bowen Lookout Trail would make a great family outing during the holiday season. Don’t forget your Cypress Provincial Winter Map and proper hiking gear! Merry Christmas, everyone!

Hi Thanks for sharing!
We would love to take our dogs and were wondering if you had to use a balm of anytime for your dogs paws to protect them from the snow? We’re new to taking out dogs out in the snow haha! Thanks 🙂
Hi Michelle – Rey has never had a problem with dry and cracking paws so I unfortunately can’t comment on any balms. I would suggest starting off with shorter hikes and just checking your pup’s paws after each outing to see if they’re drying up. If you live in Vancouver, I’d definitely suggest visiting Discover Dogs. They’re all about health and wellness and could give you some great suggestions on natural balms. Happy hiking!
Hi Josie, is this trail suitable for young beginners (4 yrs old)? Snowshoe rental available there? Thanks much!
Hi Pho! It all depends on the outdoor experience of the kids. I’d probably recommend to stick to “in-bound” trails. You do have to pay to use the trails but it’s much more family-friendly.
According to the Cypress website, snowshoe rentals are not to be taken out of Nordic boundary. https://cypressmountain.com/tickets-and-rentals
Happy Adventuring!
